changes comments: This has always been a problematic term; even though "Fists" had the most warrant when the thesaurus was compiled (and re-affirmed by me around 1998), the situation has now changed with the publication of William Sherman's _Toward a History of the Manicule_ in 2005. Since then, preference for that term has (anecdotally) grown rapidly among both scholars. The benefit of "Manicules" over "Fists" is that "manicule" doesn't have other, common meanings
