Candidate Term, 2008
Suggested change to candidate term (200907): The term was confused with "Parts" and "Books in parts" while under discussion at ALA Midwinter 2009. Solution is to propose the term "Books in parts", and update "Part-issued books" to "Part-issued books in volume form" to distinguish between the three states of publication.

The SN does not indicate that the parts are bound into a volume (or volumes) nor that all parts of the book are present; should it? As currently scoped, I would think that the term could be used for a complete or incomplete set of parts, irrespective of how they are contained. In the latter case, we have the term Parts, so I think the distinction should be made more clear.

Note from Kare Nipps (10/9/2008):Hi, Nina - Hope this finds you well. I had two questions about form/genre terms. One is that I would like to propose the term Art Deco bindings. Should I just do that through the on-line form? Also, I noticed on the wiki that Richard Noble has proposed the term "part-issued books" and I was wondering what the status of that proposal was. (I can't ask that on the wiki, as I am not a member.) It has been our practice at the Library Company and Houghton to refer to these as "Books in parts", a term which is about as prevalent with users as Richard's proposed term. I am wondering if the BS committee has discussed this and may have just decided that it should be one or the other and opted for Richard's proposal. If this is the case, maybe a cross-reference would help? All the best, Karen

I just checked looked at the iinformation on the George Arents collection. The website states:
"In the words of Sarah Augusta Dickson, the first curator of the George Arents Collection:
Books in parts may be defined as works by an author or authors which are published piecemeal over a period of time, each unit having its separate cover, usually paper or boards, and in many cases with the title-page and other preliminary matter for the volume or volumes at the end of the last part."
However, for a deeper background, I'd suggest looking at two of the links on their page. The URL for the Arents Collection at NYPL is: http://www.nypl.org/research/chss/spe/rbk/arents/arentsbooks.html

See my comment under "Parts" -- I'd like to see this term be "Books in parts" for bound or unbound, with a binding term to cover unbound parts.

Change terms to Books in parts
SN: Use for books bound or unbound of which it is known, or for which evidence suggests, that they were issued in parts
Books of a single title for which evidence suggests were originally issued in installments

Richard said that the parts are all bound together with the advertisements and covers removed so that you wouldn't necessarily now that they were issued serially. Part issued books is the term he wants because that is how they were originally issued - even if you may not immediately recognize it at first. He doesn't like "Books in part". The Part issued book term stresses the mode of issuance. Since this is a bound volume you would use P-I-B. Sarah Augusta Dixons definition of Books in parts refers to the parts themselves: "each unit having its separate cover, usually paper or boards, and in many cases with the title-page and other preliminary matter for the volume or volumes at the end of the last part." This is long, but what about SN: Use for works of which it is known, or for which evidence suggests, that they were originally issued in parts. Generally, advertisements and covers from the individual issues will have been removed for published volume. Or something.
