Additional Information on the definition and form of Cloth impression marks:
From the Bolton citation: "It seems, from observations and practical experiments, that these cloth impressions are most likely to have been made as part of a pre-printing, paper-damping process." (p. 33)
Gaskell, P. A new introduction to bibliography. Oxford University Press, 1972. Gaskell discusses paper dampening (p. 124-125) but does not mention the use of cloth: "The quires were drawn one by one through a pan of water, unfolded, and laid out flat on a board one on top of another, a sheet being folded down to mark each token."
The proposer of the term cites Bolton (p. 32-33) as saying the marks appear to be linked to printers with Strassburg connections and thus far have only been found in works printed between 1467 and 1488, though Bolton notes that "this might have been a widespread method, both chronologically as well as geographically." (p. 33)
Information on term placement in hierarchies:
The term proposer makes a good argument for placing the term in the Printing and Publishing Evidence Thesaurus: "These cloth impression marks do provide physical evidence of printing practices, (see esp. Bolton re: one-pull vs. two-pull press, p. 27-28). However, the placement of the term in the hierarchy of the thesaurus might be murky. The best fit seems to be under [Pressman's work]. Though the marks are clearly on the paper, it is not a characteristic of the paper until the printing process, so, though a bit awkward, I think this is the proper thesaurus for it. In the record cited ... [OCLC IR for #62785660], I did also include 655 _7 $a Paper evidence (Paper) $x Printing. $2 rbpap."
I have also included the term in the Paper Terms Thesaurus. Though the scope of the thesaurus limits paper defect terms to those "created in the manufacturing process," there is precedent for including post-production qualities of paper under the term, Paper defects (SN: Use for all "below par" qualities of paper emanating from its manufacture, handling, storage, treatment, or materials).
