"Bookmark. The device used for keeping the reader's place in a book was known in the Middle AGes as a 'register' and in the early 19th century as a 'marker'. The advent of the printed bookmark in the 1870s necessitated a printed title and on Victorian bookmarks both 'Bookmark' and 'Bookmarker' (with or without hyphens) were used indiscriminately with the former the most common. Both terms continue in use today. ..."

Comments: "When trying to allocate a genre term for a "bookmark"
printed in 1926, I chose "bookseller's advertisements".
However, the scopenote of "bookseller's advertisements" seems to
indicate that it should be used for earlier material only [or did I
misinterpret this?]. Silke Schaeper

Nina, I think I restored the original workform and saved Bookmarks. Not sure how to link to the sidebar. Annie

I suggest a few sublte tweaks for greater specificity: "A narrow strip of paper, cloth, or other material inserted between leaves in a book as a place marker."

I like Ryan's tweaks to the SN.
Putting it in the "Purpose of Work (Gathering term)" hierarchy sounds right to me.

I agree too. And "Purpose of work" is the only logical hierarchy. I'll change the proposed SN now.

It looks good. We can also start the SN with "Use for ..." which means it would read: "Use for a narrow strip of paper, cloth, or other material inserted between leaves in a book as a place marker."

I found some warrant for various UF's in the Encyclopedia of Ephemera and am adding them to the record.

I originally included "registers" as a UF, but think I will remove it, since AAT states that registers are attached and we're clearly talking about strips of paper, etc.
