History Note: Proposed to change SN to eliminate " ... under the aesthetic control of a single artist."

The suggested SN _is_ the current SN, minus "under the aesthetic control of a single artist." I suggest deleting this portion of the SN, as it is generally accepted that artists' books may be collaboratively produced.
Note that on this point LCSH does not make a distinction: "Here are entered books that are produced by artists and intended as visual art objects, and general works about such books. Works on such books produced in a particular place are entered under this heading with local subdivision. Works on books illustrated with original prints by well known artists and published in limited editions are entered under Artists' illustrated books. Works on existing books whose pages have been altered by paint, collage, or other media are entered under Altered books. Works on custom bindings of books, irrespective of contents, are entered under Fine bindings."
See also Johanna Drucker's _The century of artists' books_ (New York: Granary Books, 1995) in which Drucker discusses numerous collaboratively produced artists' books.
The Subcommittee proposed eliminating “… under the aesthetic control of a single artist” from the SN in this Genre Term. The Subcommittee will bring a proposal to the Midwinter meeting to change the SN for Livres d’artistes. Final version approved, with amendments to the SN

I agree about removing "single artist" but think there still needs to be a reference to artist(s) in the SN, since the term doesn't apply to aesthetic wholes created by a commercial publisher, for instance. Cribbing from the LCSH grammar, the SN could be "Use for books produced by artists as an artistic whole, integrating binding, text, illustration, etc. In general, "Livres d'artistes" denotes books containing original graphic art; "Artists' books" denotes books viewed as the works of art in themselves." (Alternatively, "a single artist" could just be replaced by "an artist or group of artists").

I like the idea of including "artists" in the SN. I also like LC's phrase "visual art objects" and am trying to figure out a way to include it. Here are two possibilities:
Use for books produced by artists and intended as visual art objects, integrating binding, text, illustration, etc. In general, "Livres d'artistes" denotes books containing original graphic art; "Artists' books" denotes books viewed as the works of art in themselves."
or
"Use for books produced by artists as an artistic whole, integrating binding, text, illustration, etc. In general, "Livres d'artistes" denotes books containing original graphic art; "Artists' books" denotes books intended as visual art objects."
I'm not crazy about the final phrase in the original SN: "... works of art in themselves." Should it be " ... works of art themselves"?

I like Erin's suggested revision. The only problem with including LC's phrase "visual art objects" is that it would be a stretch for some artists' books--particularly those produced in the early years of the genre--Ruscha's books immediately come to mind. On the other hand, Ruscha's books barely fit the SN anyway...
